Grids and Frames

A grid serves as a framework which can be used to organize graphic elements in a design. They are like the invisible glue that holds a design together. Keep your photos and elements in place by adding grids before you start to create your design.

Add and remove a grid

To add and remove a grid:

  1. Go to the Elements tab.
  2. Click on the Grids folder.
  3. Click to choose the type of grid you want to use in your design. The grid will automatically be applied to your page.
  4. To remove the grid, click on the Trash bin icon.

Add photos to grids

Using a grid is an effective way to start your design. Not only do grids help you cleanly divide your design into sections, but you can drag any photo into a grid and it will automatically crop to fit.

To add photos to grids:

  1. Go to the Elements tab.
  2. Open the Grids folder.
  3. Click or drag the grid to the editor to use in your design.
  4. Add photos to your grid by dragging them in the editor.

Add text to grids

When you add grids to your design, you can fill each grid space with photos or colors or you can also add text or text holders.

To add text to grids:

  1. Go to the Text tab.
  2. Click any of the text element or text holders to add it to your design.
  3. Select a text box. Once the text has been placed, click and drag it to move it inside your grid.
  4. Rearrange your elements.

If your design has many overlapping elements on top of your grid, you may need to rearrange them.

To move text above or below another element, click the text element to select it and open its edit menu. From there, click the expand arrow and click "Move back" - this will allow you to place your text below an element underneath it.

You may also click "Move forward" to place it on top of the element above it.

Canva has a range of frames which can be easily used to contain your photos. Create various masking and layout effects by pasting an object or an image into a frame.

To add and remove a frame:
