How do I search for free elements?

Canva offers a library of more than a million photographs, icons, and illustrations. Some these can be used for free and the rest are premium elements, which cost $1 USD to use in each design.

If you’re on a budget and want to be sure to use only free elements, follow these steps.

Article summary

  1. There are free options in every type of element including shapes, text holders and photographs.
  2. Free elements have a small FREE label in the bottom corner of the image when you search for them.
  3. Once you place the element into your design, this label will disappear.

Start in the elements tab

Click on the Elements tab. On the top portion of the elements pane you’ll see several buttons you can click on to open different element libraries such as frames, shapes, icons.

Free elements

Click on any of these buttons and they will expand to show you all of the elements they contain. The free elements will include a small box that says Free on the bottom corner. Simply drag, drop and customize into your design as you wish.

Free textholders

We also have plenty of free textholders you can use in your designs.

A textholder is a pre-designed arrangement of shapes, colors, and text that you can drop into your designs and customize. To check out our library of textholders, click the text tab and scroll through the many possibilities. Once again, all of the free elements will be clearly marked with a free box in the corner.

Finding free images through search

When you use the search tab to look for a specific element to use in your designs, the results will be sorted by relevance. This means there will be a mix of free and premium elements

However, you can still easily see which elements are free to use by checking for the free box in the corner.

Canva tip: Paste the keywords brand:BAAAAP7rQ8M or brand:BAAMOuJH0Ec to generate only the FREE elements in the library.

Hi there,

Thanks for your message, I'd be glad to help with that!

There are free options in every type of element including, but not limited to, shapes, photographs, and illustrations.

Elements that are free will have a white FREE box in the corner of the image when you search for them.

The following Help Centre article shows you how to search for free elements:
