How do I edit text?

Canva comes with a powerful text tool that you can use to make beautiful typography. We have tons of different text styles for all kinds of different design ideas all at the tip of your fingertips.

Article Summary

The following are ways you can edit text on Canva:

  1. Font type, font size, and font color.
  2. Letter spacing and line height.
  3. Text alignment (left-align, right-align, or center text).
  4. Format text in all capitals.

Font type, size, and color

When you click a text element to select it, an edit menu will appear. This contains several buttons you can click on to change your text’s style.

Change font type

The typeface button displays the current font type of the text element. Click on the font option to scroll through a menu of all available font. Each font listed indicates its name and a preview of the font style. Click any of the fonts to change the font style of your text element.

Change font size

The font size button displays the current size of the text element. Click to scroll through a menu of common font sizes to choose from, or simply type the font size you want and press Enter on your keyboard.

Change font color

The font color button appears as a circle with the current font color. Click to open a menu of color swatches to choose from, including the most recently used colors. To use a custom color, click the new color button (shaped like a plus sign). Click and drag the small white circle around the color wheel to choose a new color. Press Enter or click anywhere in the design pane to change your text to the custom color. If you have a specific color in mind, you can take advantage of our Color code feature.

Letter spacing and line height

Canva also offers advanced features you can use to alter the feel and flow of your text. Two of these features are letter spacing and line height. Here's how to go about editing these aspects of your text element:

  • Click on a text element to select it and open its edit menu.
  • Click the expand arrow on the far right side of the edit menu.

  • Click on the button in the middle of the menu marked “Text spacing”.

  • Two sliders will appear: the top one for letter spacing, and the bottom one for line height.

Letter spacing refers to how close each individual letter is to each other. Drag the slider to the right to increasing the spacing between letters, or drag it to the left to decrease the spacing.

Line height refers to the space between each line of text in a paragraph or block of text. Drag the slider to the right to increase the space between each line of text or drag the slider to the left to bring your lines closer together.

Note: You will only see the effect of the line height slider if your text element has multiple lines of text. Secondly, text spacing affects every character in a text element. If you would like to have different amounts of letters spacing or line height for different words in your text, you will need to split your text across different text elements.

Text alignment

In Canva, you have the ability to left-align, right-align, or center text.

  • Click on a text element to select it and open its edit menu.
  • Click the expand arrow on the far right side of the edit menu.
  • Click on whichever alignment style you like to change the text alignment.

Format text in all capitals

One popular style for posters and flyers is to use all capital or uppercase letters.

  • Click on a text element to select it and open its edit menu.
  • Click the expand arrow on the far right side of the edit menu.
  • Click the "Uppercase" option to format your text in all capital letters.

Note: Canva remembers how your text was first typed. If you made a mistake or don't like how your design looks with all capital formatting, simply click Undo or click Uppercase again to remove the uppercase style.
