How do I fill a grid space with a solid color?

Our grid elements make it easy to crop and arrange photo elements, but you can also fill any space in a grid with solid color.

Here’s how:

01. Add a grid

If your design does not have a grid element, add one. To add a grid, click the Elements tab and then the Grids folder to view our collection of grids. Scroll through the options to find the grid that suits your design, then click or drag the grid into your design.

02. Click on a grid space

Click on a grid space to select it and open its edit menu. To fill the grid space with a solid color, click the color button in the middle of the edit menu. If the grid space is empty, the color button will look like a circle with a hilly landscape. If the grid space contains a photo, the color button will look like a circle filled with a tiny image of that photo.

03. Click the Color button

Clicking the color button will open the color menu. The color menu will feature a color palette of some basic colors, as well as any colors you recently used in your design. You can fill the grid space with any of these colors by clicking on a color. If you want a different color, click the add new color button, which looks like a circle with a plus sign inside.

04. Click Add a new Color

Clicking on the add new color button will open the color wheel. Click and drag the small white circle around the color wheel until you find the exact hue you like to use in the grid space. You can also drag the value slider on the bottom to adjust how light or dark your color is.

05. Use a HEX code

If you know the HEX code of the color you like to use, you can copy and paste its six-digit color code into the field marked “color code #” onto the color wheel menu. You can also use this feature to copy a color code from one Canva design to another design.
