The Ultimate Beginners Guide to Canva

Canva is a simple to use graphic design platform that will enable you to easily create beautiful designs for web and print. It gives you all the tools you need to design, even if you haven’t previously had any design experience.

Canva gives you all the tools you need for professional design - thousands of layouts, a huge range of beautiful fonts, stunning backgrounds, over a million images and illustrations and powerful photo editing tools. It’s all online and very simple to use.

In just eight months Canva users have already created over 1.5 million designs, so you can be assured you are not alone!

In this tutorial we will take you through how to create and publish your first design.

First things first, sign up for a Canva account at It’s very quick and free.

Once you have signed up you will be taken through a 23 Second video on how to use Canva. It’s that simple.

You will then be prompted to go through five fun tasks to get you familiar with using the Canva editor. These are highly recommended, as you will be able to learn to search for images, change the color of graphics and a whole lot more. To get to your Home page - click the Canva icon on the upper left hand corner of the editor.

Getting started

Choose from over 30 different templates from your Canva homepage.


Click the layouts tab

Click the “Layouts” tab and choose a layout that you like.

Drag the layout onto your page and It will snap automatically in place.

Search for images

Search for images to put in your design. There are free and paid images on the library. Roll your mouse over the images to see the prices. There are thousands of images that are free.


Select an image

Select the image that you like, drag it directly on your frame and it will snap into place. There is a watermark over the image (the criss-cross pattern). This will be removed when you publish your design.


Change the background

Click on the backgrounds tab, select a background, and change the color.


Change the color of elements

Click on the text holder, click the square pick a color option then choose a new color.


Download your design

Publish and download your design. Click “Download” in the upper right hand side of the editor. You have the option to download your designs as JPEG, PNG, PDF: standard and PDF : for print file formats. 

Pay for premium images

Complete your design. Pay for the premium image(s) that you have used in your design. You can choose to pay $1 or buy credits in bulk so you can get a discount. If you want to make any changes to my design and re-download it, you can do it for free within 24 hours.


Share your graphic

To share your design, click "Share" at the top right-hand corner of the screen. From the share dialogue box, click on the grey URL text at the bottom of the menu. Copy it either by holding down Control and C, or selecting 'Copy' from the edit menu of your browser. Paste the URL in an email, on social media, or anywhere you’d like to share your design.
